Great Pond

About the Pond

Great Pond derives its name from its size, as it is one of the largest bodies of freshwater in the area. The term “Great” emphasizes its prominence and significance to the local landscape and community, serving as a vital resource for recreation and wildlife. It is one of two named “Great Ponds” in the area, with the other located in Truro. Even though it is named Great, it is less than half the size of Gull Pond. Great Pond is 56 feet at its maximum depth and covers an area of 44 acres.

Fun Fact: The Commonwealth of Massachusetts labels as “Great” all ponds which are at least 10 acres in size. The Commonwealth holds the title to these water bodies in trust for the benefit of the public, which preserves and protects the rights of the public to access those ponds.
