Long Pond

About the Pond
Long Pond in Wellfleet received its name due to its elongated shape, making it distinct from other ponds in the area. The name reflects the geographical characteristics of the pond, which is known for its scenic beauty and recreational opportunities. Wellfleet’s Long Pond is one of seven Long Ponds across Cape Cod. Long Pond is especially notable for its importance to the town of Wellfleet’s historic ice trade. In the 19th century, ice houses were built along the pond shore to harvest and store ice during winter months for selling and shipping for use in keeping foods fresh around the region. Long Pond is 50 feet at its maximum depth and covers an area of 37 acres.
