“Ponds are an important part of the Cape Cod ecosystem. They are connected to estuarine and marine ecosystems via ground- and surface water; provide habitat for fish, wildlife, and aquatic vegetation, including many rare species; and support complex food webs and rare natural communities.” — Cape Cod Freshwater Strategy
“Wellfleet’s ponds are among the last remaining pristine bodies of freshwater on Cape Cod. Like many other ponds on the Cape, they face significant threats from the unprecedented rise in water and air temperatures, exacerbated by increasing nutrient inputs from human activities in and around the ponds.” — Wellfleet Pond Management Plan.
