Duck Pond

About the Pond

Duck Pond is the highest of the Wellfleet Ponds, a whopping 8-9 feet above sea level. As you might expect, Duck Pond is named for the ducks that are often found swimming in and around the pond. Duck Pond is 56 feet at its maximum depth and covers an area of 13 acres. Conservation efforts at Duck Pond focus on protecting its unique ecosystem and the wildlife that inhabits it. These efforts include habitat restoration projects, invasive species management, and public education programs to raise awareness about the importance of preserving local wildlife. Duck Pond boasts the longest history of water quality studies in Wellfleet ponds. Its water was known to be so clear that mosses grew on the bottom of its deepest parts (to 60 feet), inspiring one of Jacques Cousteau’s sons to do a deep dive in the pond back in the 1950’s.
